  • Grand Chess Tour Report by John Brezina

"The global reach of chess never ceases to amaze me."

I think it's great that we have a local Colorado player bringing us international chess superstar tournament reports. Not to mention the great photography. This time John Brezina attended the opening rounds of a FIDE Grand Chess Tour tournament held in Zagreb, Croatia. Located east of Italy across the Adriatic Sea. And, yes, I had to look that up :-) I am pleased to have the privilege of... Read more >>

  • DCC June 2019 Report

If the idea takes off, then we will have added another dimension to the Denver Chess Club.

We have realized that requiring players interested in the DCC team tournament idea to form their own teams would be difficult. While Ben Gurka's formula to ensure fair and balanced teams is right and proper, and each player could of course easily calculate their own median number. But how would they then connect with two other players to team up with? We plan to try out this concept beginning with the DCC August 2019 tournament, with teams forming throughout the... Read more >>

  • DCC May 2019 Report

It is said that chess is not a sport because physical exertion is not required. Well then, why is playing tournament poker considered a sport?

In a recent Chess.com interview, GM Anish Giri makes a case for why chess should be considered a sport. Saying, "...the chess I’m playing right now is absolutely a sport, and I consider myself and my opponent's athletes." Then speaking about the "fierce competition" in Russian chess schools, "... the mentality of their athletes is a little bit different to those from western countries." Again... Read more >>

  • DCC April 2019 Championship Report

The DCC is proud to have an eclectic mix of people every Tuesday playing an ancient game in the modern high tech world.

We have set another attendance record for the DCC Tuesday night games. Over the course of a month, our attendance has been in the high eighties several times. This month 94 players played at least one game. That is all well and good, but I am more inclined to go by the weekly attendance as an indication of the growth of the DCC. For this month's 3rd round we paired 72 players. Nearly didn't... Read more >>
