If the idea takes off, then we will have added another dimension to the Denver Chess Club.
We have realized that requiring players interested in the DCC team tournament idea to form their own teams would be difficult. While Ben Gurka's formula to ensure fair and balanced teams is right and proper, and each player could of course easily calculate their own median number. Many possibilities for intrigue and competitive excitement.
Thanks to Ann Davies and Brian Wall, the DCC has a great new idea to make the Tuesday night games even more exciting. The monthly tournament will run as usual, but now players will have the option to play as part of a 3 person team for a chance to win additional prize money. It is said that chess is not a sport because physical exertion is not required. Well then, why is playing tournament poker considered a sport?
In a recent Chess.com interview, GM Anish Giri makes a case for why chess should be considered a sport. The DCC is proud to have an eclectic mix of people every Tuesday playing an ancient game in the modern high tech world.
We have set another attendance record for the DCC Tuesday night games. Over the course of a month, our attendance has been in the high eighties several times. This month 94 players played at least one game. That is all well and good, but I am more inclined to go by the weekly attendance as an indication of the growth of the DCC.
